Dwight Wood and son Lewis will undertake an epic 60-day cycling adventure in July
Thursday 3rd April 2014
By Zachary Norman, Reporter
Dwight Wood, 56, and son Lewis, 11, who live in Aylmer Road, Leytonstone, plan to cover more than 50 miles each day and hope to ‘couch surf’ as often as possible to cut costs and gain local knowledge.
Mr Wood, who is chairman of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands preservation group, also wants to tell people about the park on the way – he feels it should be known as the Hampstead Heath of east London.
The father-of-four, whose day job is to help run a sustainability company, said: “The idea is that we see amazing things around the coast and meet nice people, and do it without using a load of carbon.
“We want to prove to people that there’s so much to see in this country and that to see it you don’t need to spend a fortune.”
Lewis, who rides to Forest School in College Place, Snaresbrook, every day has been cycling since he was four.
“I’m looking forward to seeing lots of new places and new people,” he said.
“I see it as my biggest challenge before secondary school.”
They will set off from Exeter on July 5 and plan to cycle 2,650 miles clockwise around the coast before finishing in Bottesford, Lincolnshire on September 4
In order to cut prove that epic holidays can be taken on a budget they are looking for anyone willing to let them ‘couch surf’ along the way, even offering a reciprocal night’s accommodation at their home for anyone kind enough to offer.

First Post! Stage 1
Lewis age 11 and Dwight the old man 57 are cycling and couch surfing around Britain via the coast
this summer. (List of places, dates and distances are on the spread
sheet attached.)
We have 60 days only as thats the length of summer holiday
We are doing this to be able to show;
(a) its possible and to
(b) have the great experience of seeing the diverse country in which we live. All part of life's experience
(c) Because Dad said so!!!!! bullying needs to be reported. Must look up the number for child line.
We are actually starting in Exeter on the 5th July 2014. total planned cycling distance 2650 miles. Finishing in Bottesford (Lincs, my mums house age 87) on the 4th September. Roughly 50 miles a day with one day rest each week (or to allow for unforeseen challenges)
We are life members of the national trust so will visit many of their places en-route plus the vast array of sites and activities on the way
We will self support ourselves; 1 bag between 2 of us.Max 9 kg
Our budget is £50.00 per day 'all in' for:- food. odd ferry . train journeys. accommodation, entrance fees for places visited. bike parts etc.
We had thought of using the trip to raise awareness of the great Grade II* Wanstead Park that Dwight chairs the steering group.

you know anyone who lives in any of our destination towns (spreadsheets list attached) please ask them if they are willing to put us up for
the night.
We offer a reciprocal arrangement to any one who does as they
can come and stay with us in London The idea is to keep our budget down
as far as possible.
